Life and Death

where will you go at death

Psalm 90 and 91 Eternality

Have you ever stopped to ponder the word eternally? What does it mean to you? God is eternal and He lives and moves in heaven. He is the creator of all and sustainer of it as well. Man is a created being and was created to live and move for all eternity, but man chose to reject the path that God had planned for him. The psalmist reflects on who God is and who man is. God is perfect but man is sinful and life ends and is no more.

When I was a little girl, I lived across the street from a cemetery. It was frightening and to me dangerous. What lurked there? What did the many stones erected say? Each was etched with the names and dates of a person’s existence. There is no story of their life or their death but only an etched stone with the particulars of their life: born…and died…. The psalmist explained: “You bring their lives to an end and they “fall asleep.” In the morning they are like the grass that sprouts up:” [Ps 90:5] But, what about the life between the date of a persons’ birth and his/her death? Again, the psalmist records: God knows our sins and yes even our hidden sins for He is omniscient. Thus, He numbers our days that we may turn to Him. The days of our lives add up to 70 years, or 80, if one is especially strong. But even one’s best years are marred by trouble and oppression. Yes, they pass quickly and we fly away.

Today as you reflect on your day, ask if it is profitable and rewarding and if God should choose, how will you be remembered; just a birth date and a death date or memories of a life lived to honor God?
