King Saul
1Samuel 13-14 Saul is a picture of the failings of our lives. God will use Saul as the new leader of the people to reveal His words: a king will conscript your sons and daughters, but the people refused to heed this warning. God gave them what they wanted in a man who turned out to be impatient, impulsive, and makes rash vows. Instead of mirroring God, compassionate, gracious in mercy and truth [Ps 86:15], he is selfish and foolish. His life is a microcosm of one who has the words but not a true believer’s actions.
Do we merely mouth the words of a follower of God, or does our life mirror His qualities? James reminds us that God’s word is our mirror to reveal what we are truly like. Do we look into His mirror and then turn from our way to follow God, or do we see what God reveals and walk away? [James 1:23-25] Saul’s mirror was the prophet and priest Samuel who was old but wise in his years. In contrast, Saul impatiently behaved as a priest instead of waiting for Samuel. He covered his sin with the “but’s” rather than confessing it. Secondly, Saul has not understood what God has called him to do.
Will you follow Him with all your heart and obey His commandments?
