Judges 1-3 Disobedient Israel

blessings and cursings

Joshua called the nation together to ensure that they knew the Lord’s plan for them and what they should NOT do. Unfortunately they once again followed the idols of the land rather than cleansing the land of them. We wonder why they did so but all we need to do is to read that they had not witnessed the deeds of God while Joshua was alive. Do we need visual pictures of what is right and what is sin? Is that what we do when our leaders walk away from God?

In some ways it was good that God took Joshua home so he would not see this and today we feel much the same way when a  so called “godly” leader strays or dies. Our hearts are heavy and very sad. This entire book will show us the ups and downs of the Israelites and their sin. It opens our eyes to see the truth of Jeremiah 17:9 “The heart is deceitful and desperately wicked.” That is the picture we see in Judges.

Is there any good to come out of this book? Yes, it is this: God reveals sin that we may repent and turn back to Him for He is a forgiving God. He desires we follow Him and obey Him.
