1 Samuel 21 Truth Always Wins…Lies Always Loses

Mirrors don't lie

As we wander through the words of Samuel, we come to this chapter in David’s life where he blatantly lied to the Priest Ahimelech about why he was alone and needed food and a sword. Ahimelech seemed to know little about David and Saul’s circumstances, so he lied about why he was there. At first, it looks innocent on the surface because David is running away from Saul and is truly hungry. This is also true for us when we succumb to lying instead of telling the truth. Why is it so easy to lie and so hard to tell the truth? It is because we are all sinners and we listen to the father of lies, the devil himself. Jesus pointed that out in the NT.

What should David had done? He knew he was lying and should have told the priest the truth. Trapp wrote: “Some go about to excuse David’s lying here: but that cannot be. The consequences of it were very sad…and afterward made his soul melt for very heaviness.”  All along David has relied upon the Lord but this time he failed “big time.” David would soon regret this decision. (see 1 Samuel 22:22) And we regret our lies later. We try to push it under the rug as we say, but a lie is a lie, and God hates lies and liars.

Today take this admonition: Truth always wins and liars always lose. David’s lie cost the lives of 85 priests and God will hold him, as well as us when we lie, accountable. Be a truth teller today and every day.
