2 Samuel 13-15 Discipline gone awry

David had many children but two stand out as ones who dishonored their father and their sister. Amon and Absalom were by far the most despicable of all. Interesting that yesterday we talked about being people of integrity and here are two royal sons who were the very opposite! They lied to get their way and when it came to pass, their lie became hate and hate became the tool of murder.
Today we see parents who are unwilling to stand up to their children. They refuse to correct their ways and these two sons of David are now living examples of what happens when a parent refuses to discipline their children. We find ourselves busy or letting others to do the parental work rather than ourselves. When a father does not correct the result is a child that is a shame to the family. With David the result was murder and others killed the one. It is a sad testament.
Today if you are a parent, take time to teach and discipline with the rod to bring about correct behavior. If you don’t others may have to do that job you were supposed to do. “Be keenly aware that just as a parent disciplines his child, so the Lord your God disciplines you.” [Deut 8:5] And that is the story of David.
