Memories are fleeting…
1Chron 4-6 As we read these genealogical records, we are inserted into the family trees of the 12 tribes of Jacob. When Jacob was alive, did he consider that from him would come those 12 tribes that would become a nation? I often think I am just a pebble in a pond, but then the ripples outward remind me that God is at work, and although today is a Moses’ kind of day, I can look back and then forward. God is at work in my life and the lives of those who will follow me.
Consider Jabez and his prayer or Reuben and the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh who called upon the Lord because they trusted in Him. We know the outcome of Jabez’s prayer: God granted him what he requested. However, Ezra, the most often noted as the Chronicler, tells us that these three tribes called upon the Lord but then, after their victory resorted to idolatry. Sometimes we want God to bless us; then, we forget what God has done.
Our memories seem to be fleeting, and when God blesses us, we seem to forget. The hymn writer wisely said: count your blessings, name them, and see what God has done. I need to do that more often, so I don’t forget and negate His gifts.
