The Message and the Messenger

The message is revealed

Amos 1-3 True story: I encountered a pastor after morning service and wanted to speak to him about his sermon. I began, “Pastor..” but was rudely interrupted by this: “I am Dr. Jones.” I left and never returned, and perhaps you may feel that way too. You relate more to Amos the Sheepherder from Tekoa than someone who wears their Ph.D. on their sleeve. So why should we pay attention to him? God had a message for Israel, and He has a message for us because He reveals the profound and hidden things whether we are sheepherder or have a Ph.D. behind our name. All He asks is that we be His conduit to a lost and dying generation. God used Amos to uncover a simple warning message: For three things…no make that four is his repeated refrain.

So what are we to glean from Amos? It is this: Certainly, the Sovereign Lord does nothing without first revealing his plan. [Amos 3:7] God is not willing that any should perish, but all come to repentance. [2Peter 3:9] Perhaps you feel like Amos, you don’t have a pedigree or you feel like Jeremiah thinking some other person will tell them. But, God has chosen what the world thinks foolish to shame the wise, and God chose what the world thinks weak to shame the strong. [1Cor 1:27]

Jesus said: go and tell. Are you going? Are you telling?
